The Cult of Microsoft

A completely different perspective on Microsoft. The article “The Cult of Microsoft” by Ed Zitron examines the corporate culture of Microsoft under CEO Satya Nadella and the introduction of the “growth mindset” concept. Originally developed by psychologist Carol Dweck, it distinguishes between a “fixed mindset” (skills as unchangeable) and a “growth mindset” (skills can grow through effort).

Zitron argues that Microsoft has turned this concept into a quasi-religious ideology that influences all decisions and is used to control employees. The “growth mindset” is used as a measure of success and flexibility, with people with a “fixed mindset” considered inflexible. He questions the scientific basis of the concept and sees Nadella’s book Hit Refresh as an attempt to present himself as a visionary leader and to deliberately direct the culture. Zitron criticizes the unreflective implementation of the “growth mindset” at Microsoft and the possible negative consequences for the corporate culture.
